Basel 2010 marks the 275th year since Jehan-Jacques Blancpain declared his profession as a watchmaker on the village rolls of Villeret. Three announcements headline Blancpain’s celebration of this important anniversary:

A new grand complication, Carrousel Répétition Minutes Le Brassus, with the world’s first carrousel powered cathedral gong minute repeater movement ; a new Villeret collection reinterpreting the look of Blancpain’s most traditional and understated line ; and a new complicated addition to the L-evolution Collection featuring a week of the year indication.

The Le Brassus grand complication builds upon Blancpain’s exclusive flying one minute carrousel which debuted two years ago and which established a host of world firsts. Only a very few watch brands are capable of producing a 100% in house minute repeater movement. Blancpain stands completely alone in having developed not only an entirely new cathedral gong minute repeater mechanism, but marrying it with its one minute flying carrousel. In the creation of this pioneering movement, Blancpain has created several key innovations for the repeater, including a system for fixing the cathedral gong rings to the inside of the case to produce extraordinary sound and a system which fully protects the movement from damage if the crown is turned while the repeater is running. As befits such a complicated movement, the red gold movement bridges and mainplate are individually hand engraved.

The new Villeret Collection distils aesthetics and complications that have been at Blancpain’s core since the early 1980s and brings them to the forefront backed by the technical advances which are the product of Blancpain’s heavy investment in movement development over the past several years. The Villeret Collection is Blancpain’s most traditional and classic, featuring the signature double stepped case and classic dials. All of these elements are featured in the new models, subtly reinterpreted but instantly recognizable as Blancpain.

The signature complication for the Villeret Collection for almost 30 years has been the complete calendar moon phase and several variants of this complication will be offered, including models using Blancpain’s exclusive 66R9 8-day power reserve automatic movement. The new collection will also offer a range of manual and automatic timepieces, with the summit occupied by an 8 day power reserve manual wind wristwatch utilizing Blancpain’s exclusive in-house 13R0 movement.

The L-evolution collection is now enriched with a Semainier model, driven by an automatic winding 8-day power reserve movement offering a week of the year indication along with a large date display.

For 2010 Blancpain expands the Fifty Fathoms domain of sport to embrace the complications of a moon phase and a complete calendar married with the traditional sport companion of a column-wheel controlled flyback chronograph.

Topping the pyramid of Blancpain’s Basel 2010 new releases is the Carrousel Répétition Minutes Le Brassus. This grand complication, for the first time in watchmaking history, combines a flying one-minute carrousel and a cathedral gong minute repeater.

Few in the watchmaking industry are able to offer the minute repeater complication and of those only a handful have developed their own minute repeater movement. Since the late 80s, Blancpain has developed and steadily produced not one but two different minute repeater movements. In 2010, Blancpain changes that total to three, with the introduction of the Carrousel Répétition Minutes Le Brassus.

This entirely new grand complication showcases a host of exclusive Blancpain innovations. The minute repeater features a cathedral gong striking mechanism, meaning that its sounding rings are extra long, circling the movement one and a half times to produce superior richness in the sound. The transmission of sound from the movement through the case remains a classic challenge for minute repeater developers. Blancpain has met that challenge by attaching the cathedral gong rings to the inside of the case, a solution which achieves industry leading volume and clarity. Further enhancing the performance of the repeater, Blancpain has developed a special flying regulator for the movement.

Historically repeaters have been vulnerable to damage if the owner attempts to change the time while the repeater is engaged and sounding. An innovation addresses this problem; actuation of the repeater disconnects the mechanism from the crown, thus eliminating the risk of damage if the crown is manipulated. As befits such a complicated movement, the red gold movement bridges and mainplate are individually hand engraved.

The heart of this new Le Brassus timepiece is Blancpain’s one minute flying carrousel, which established a multitude of world firsts when it was introduced two years ago, including the world’s first one minute carrousel, first flying carrousel and first carrousel in a wristwatch.

This unique combination of carrousel and minute repeater debuts in a 45mm red gold case with a brushed white gold chapter ring and red gold applied numerals. The combination of an opened dial center and sapphire case back allows a perfect view of the complex minute repeater mechanism and hand carving of the movement bridges.

With its classical lines, the Villeret Collection has been core to Blancpain since the early 1980s. For 2010, Blancpain has reinterpreted the collection with nine new models ranging from a pocket watch to an 8-day power reserve complicated moon phases complete calendar timepiece.

For three decades, round double stepped cases, roman numeral dials, and understated aesthetics have defined Blancpain’s Villeret watches. These design elements have been thoroughly respected in the 2010 collection, which brings them forward with not only a reinterpreted style but accompanied with the full benefit of Blancpain’s new movement advances.

The flagship of the 2010 Villeret Collection is the complete calendar moon phases model fitted with Blancpain’s 8-day power reserve automatic caliber 6639 movement, with its three mainspring barrels and free-sprung titanium balance. This movement not only offers an extraordinarily long power reserve for a watch of this complication, but also, unlike other moon phases / complete calendars in the industry, allows the owner to set any of the indications at any time without fear of damaging the mechanism. Every other moon phases / complete calendar movement forbids changes during certain hours of the day. Additionally, Blancpain has incorporated its patented under-lug correctors that produce a perfectly clean case side profile, free from adjustment dimples, and which allow the owner to set each indication with finger pushes instead of an adjustment tool. In the date display Blancpain recalls 18th century watchmaking tradition by utilizing a blued serpentine steel hand. Historically, hands used for indications other than time adopted this shape to distinguish them from the primary time hands. Two models will be offered: in platinum and in red gold with a grand feu enamel dial.

The second 8-day power reserve model in the 2010 Villeret line features Blancpain’s 13R0 manual wind movement (with three main spring barrels and titanium free-sprung balance). This new Villeret model, with large seconds and power reserve indications, will be offered in platinum with a grand feu enamel dial and as well in red gold.

Blancpain’s L-evolution Collection, which debuted at Basel in 2009, expands this year with a new long power reserve complication, the L-evolution Semainier. Powered by an in-house automatic winding movement with three mainspring barrels and a titanium free-sprung balance, the L-evolution Semainier offers week of the year, large date, day of the week and power-reserve indications in addition to its extraordinarily long 8-day power reserve.

The L-evolution Semainier incorporates all of the features that hallmarked the Collection when it was unveiled last year, including a complex multi-layered dial, bold numerals, crisp double stepped bezel, removable lugs and 43.5mm case diameter. It also shares Blancpain’s new côtes paraboliques decoration which sets off the extra large jewels of the movement, all of which is visible through the clear case back. The Semainier will be offered in stainless steel and red gold.

Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms Collection is home to the most rugged sports watches in all of Blancpain’s lines. For 2010 Blancpain expands the Fifty Fathoms domain of sport to embrace the complications of a moon phase and a complete calendar married with the traditional sport companion of a column-wheel controlled flyback chronograph.

This newest member of the Fifty Fathoms family, with its complicated 448-part movement, has been fitted with a host of Blancpain movement innovations. The moon phase complete calendar mechanism is drawn from the caliber F185 movement, offering the unique capability of risk-free setting of any indication regardless of the time of day or night. Other complete calendar moon phase mechanisms offered in the industry forbid setting of indications at certain times because of risk of damage to the delicate components of the calendar. Blancpain solved this problem with its unique design that frees the owner from worrying about whether it is safe to set the calendar indications. Setting itself is further facilitated by the incorporation of Blancpain’s patented under lug correctors that eliminate the need for adjusters on the sides of the case and which allow finger-tip setting in place of an adjusting tool.

The chronograph base is Blancpain’s classic vertical clutch column-wheel controlled flyback movement.

The stainless steel case is 45 mm in diameter and fitted with a blue colored sapphire unidirectional bezel and blue dial.
