Rojard, Antoine
Antoine Rojard, probably the son of the horologist Jean-Daniel Rojard, was active in Geneva at the
end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. He is known to have produced automaton and unusual
watches, including ones with thermometers. The Rojard firm continued until the end of the 19th century
and produced among other things repeating watches in the English style.
Rojard claimed to have invented an automaton mechanism in which as one function was disengaged
another almost immediately engaged, allowing a sequence of mechanical actions to be portrayed.
This control mechanism runs from a single wheel and reduces the overall complexity of the
mechanism without diminishing the effect or apparent complexity of the automaton. A musical
automaton snuffbox employing this system is kept in our collections (Inv. S-770).

Notes
The case-back is enamelled, blue colour, with the royal emblem of the Siam.
The cuvette (dome) is engraved in taille-douce (fine cut) in Thai letters with the mention “Royal Grant /
Year 116”. The year “116” evidently refers to the foundation of the Chakri, the reigning dynasty of
Siam (today Thailand), by Chao Phya Chakri (1737–1809), King of Siam under the name of Rama I
(1782–1809). This great Siamese dignitary came to power in 1782 after assassinating the general
Phya Taksin (1734–1782), King of Siam in 1768, accused of madness and overthrown by a rebellion.
The one hundred and sixteenth year of this dynasty corresponds to the year 1898, date at which this
watch was offered as a gift.
